Just Do It!

I’ve always struggled with my weight. Even as a teen, I never saw my abs, never had a six-pack, and never felt great about taking off my shirt in public. I had seasons of whole-hearted dedication to a particular sport, workout routine, diet or activity that would help me shed some pounds, lose a chin or two and feel a little better about myself and my physique however, unlike some who seem to have won the genetic lottery, I’ve found that I’m always having to work at this harder than I feel I should. Anyone relate?

Here’s my point. I know that the things I commit my will and my heart to are the things that tend to improve and succeed to a level I’m satisfied with and the things I choose not to fully commit my will and heart to are the things that tend to suffer or fall short of my hopes and expectations. This principle holds true for my physique as much as it holds true for my marriage, my relationship with God, my kids, my vocation, my hobbies, etc… Commitment is important. Commitment provides the internal resolve and perseverance to fully dedicate ourselves to something that we feel is important.

Mountain biking is a passion of mine. I am committed to the sport. I think about mountain biking when I’m not mountain biking. I try and ride as often as I can because I love it and the way it makes me feel physically, emotionally and even spiritually. Even still, I wish I was a better, more capable mountain biker and I’m getting there because I’m committed to it. I wish this were true in other areas of my life however many of the results, rewards, benefits, or outcomes I expect to realize are not always congruent with the level of commitment I am willing to put into “the thing” I’m going after. Does this hold true for you as well? We want to experience a deep sense of connection with God but are we committed to seeking Him or spending time with Him on a regular basis? We desire better intimacy with our wives but are we committed to connecting with them emotionally first so that they feel loved and appreciated? We long to be close to our kids but are we committed to carving out special one-on-one time with them? We expect to be getting paid more by now but are we committed to working harder and achieving better results in our jobs?

Ponder. Take a moment and assess the thing(s) that you wish were more in-line with your expectations and then consider the level of commitment you are putting forth toward the desired outcome.

Share. If you are willing, take a moment and share your thoughts on this topic with the rest of us so that we might be motivated in our own personal journeys of commitment.

Be inspired. Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

Let’s go get it!
